Thursday Thirteen #22 - Inventions

With Canada Day fast approaching (July 1st), I thought I'd post some Canadiana. Here are
Thirteen Canadian Inventions
  1. Electric Light Bulb – Henry Woodward invented an electric light bulb in 1874 and sold the patent to Thomas Edison
  2. Garbage Bag (polyethylene) – invented by Harry Wasylyk in 1950
  3. Heart Pacemaker – invented by Dr. John A. Hopps in 1950
  4. IMAX Movie System – co-invented in 1968 by Grahame Ferguson, Roman Kroitor and Robert Kerr
  5. Jetliner – the first commercial jetliner to fly in North America was designed by James Floyd in 1949. The first test flight of the AVRO Jetliner was on August 10, 1949 (if you don’t know anything about the AVRO ARROW, I urge you to Google it. The story is nothing less than fascinating)
  6. Plexiglas – polymerized methyl methacrylate was invented by William Chalmers in 1931
  7. Portable Film Developing System – invented by Arthur Williams McCurdy in 1890, but he foolishly sold the patent to George Eastman in 1903 (d’oh)
  8. Robertson Screw – (and the Robertson screwdriver!) was invented in 1908 by Peter L. (you guessed it) Robertson.
  9. Snowmobile – invented by Joseph-Armand Bombardier in 1958
  10. Television Camera – invented by F.C.P. Henroteau in 1934
  11. Trivial Pursuit – invented in 1979 by Chris Haney and Scott Abbott
  12. Walkie-Talkie – invented by Donald L. Hings in 1942
  13. Zipper – invented by Gideon Sundback in 1913

I found so many interesting inventions made by Canadians - I had no idea - and it was very hard to narrow this list to a mere 13. If your interested in seeing more, go HERE.
The one that shocked me most was the lightbulb.
Which one surprised you?

Yep, the light bulb surprised me, too.

But my first thought was, "Why am I not surprised by this list? Those Canucks have good ideas!"

Happy TT to one of my many favorite Canadians.

Wow, I had no idea about the light bulb and Edison, the thief!

I didn't know any of these, thanks for sharing!

I knew about some of these but not all of them. Thank you for teaching me something new! Happy TT.

Zipper was a great invention! Thanks for stopping by and have a good Thursday!

The light-bulb surprised me too. Great TT - as a fellow Canadian I am totally going to check out the site you've linked too.

I've posted 13 cool writing tips from Jack on my TT this week - do stop by!

Happy T13!

That's an old, old story -- someone inventing something and then selling the patent, often for a pittance, to someone else who makes a fortune from it. Everyone thinks Edison invented the light bulb. Poor old Mr. Woodward.

I KNEW you Canadians were clever, I LOVE trivial Pursuit... and the zipper is pretty useful (gosh - just think how annoying it must have been doing up and undoing all those buttons before the zipper was invented)

Cool Beans! I used to play Trivial Pursuit quite a bit as a young'un, hee hee. And that's a cool list of inventions! Thinking of snowmobiles makes me feel wistful for snow, with warm weather here and hot weather on its way.

Happy TT and Happy upcoming Canada Day, my great friend and one of my very favorite Canadians!

I think we'll keep Canadians around the place. You've invented some pretty nifty things ;-)

I love any country that's given us Trivial Pursuit :)

I think a lot of good things have always come from Canada. But the light bulb and the zipper was a surprise.

Very cool list. I had no idea about the zipper or the lightbulb.

We invented the BlackBerry too! Not that I'm partial because I work for the company either...or that I'm an addict...nope not me, can stop at any time...

*stretches her thumbs*

Interesting list.
It would be easier to ask "Which one didn't surprise you?" The answer to which would have been the snowmobile. ;o) Where else on earth could it have been invented? LOL
But that list just goes to show that Canadians are impressive people. (As if we didn't know that one before!).

So is this book research? I did not know about the light bulb. Your son will have an advantage when it comes to research.

Ann Aguirre said...

All of them. I had no idea!

Tempest Knight said...

Wow... great TT! I didn't know about this. :) Thanks for sharing.

Great list... particularly thankful for trivial pursuit... oh yeah and zippers!

Tilly Greene said...

The snowmobile.

Just kidding, probably the garbage bag was my biggest surprise. Great list - but who is noted as creating poutine - that stuff is adictive!

What the world is a Robertson Screw? lol

Candy Minx said...

I love this list! I love the Robertson screwdriver too...

The Avro Arrow...is one of my favourite inventions but we stopped making them. They are still an innovative jet...and only four are left in the world. Not only did we stop making them, we destroyed most of them, on purpose.

Hey I hope you are doing well and enjoying some of ths incredible weather.

I completely forgot that IMAX was a Canadian invention and how about that space arm?

Unfortunately the light bulb seems to tuurn out to be a bad invention ...dangerous for energy/environment. Oh well, win some lose some.

Cheers,

heres mine if you get time Wylie...

I always knew Canada was cool, but who knew they were Trivial Pursuit cool?!

I'm a Great Big Sea fanatic in the southwest US, so you can see where I'm alone down here, lol.

Crud I was going to make a comment and then I had to drive the boss somewhere.

Very cool TT Wylie!!

Wow, I didn't know many of these either. Light bulb?? Where have I been all these years? LOL!!

Great list, as always, Wylie.

As a Chicago gal, I'm afraid I must take issue with #13. While Gideon's invention was the first to be called "zipper," Whitcomb Judson introduced the "clasp locker" at the Chicago's World's Fair in 1893. It was ugly and unsuccessful, but still, it was the first zipper. This takes some of the sting out of knowing we Yanks weren't first with the light bulb!

The light bulb totally surprised me! I always thought it was Thomas Edison! hehe We Americans tend to claim all big advancements, even if we didn't really do it.

Robin L. Rotham said...

Wow, I can't believe Thomas Edison has gotten all the credit for the light bulb for so long! I'm disillusioned.

Emma Wayne Porter said...

I'm doin' the Carson here. "I did not know that. I did not know that."

And yes, we awful Americans do like to grab the glory. Like teh Internets.

Great list again. Take care.

I knew most of these, but had forgotten about the IMAX being Canadian - very cool!

Thanks for visiting my TT. :-)

Sparky Duck said...

Canada Day is a real holiday? I thought it was just something made up by the McKenzie brothers or something.

and you can keep the IMAX thank you very much or I will be barfing in one of those polyethelene garbage bags.

impwork said...

None of them really surprised me. They all had to be invented somewhere so why not Canada?

Great list :-)

PJ said...

Cool list, I didn't know about any of these facts.

Gotta love the inventor of the zipper! But so many other good ones!

Awesome list!

Great list!! Yes, so many inventions happen at the same time, and some take them all the way to the finish line, and then some steal them!

Ann said...

Great list, thanks for the info. Happy TT.

Spy Scribbler said...

I thought Edison invented the lightbulb, too! I can't believe I didn't know, all these years!

Happy TT! Cool list!
