Late to the party, but I'm here... with Hedley and Simple Plan

Since kids became the predominant time-suckers in my life, I feel like I'm late to the party where music is concerned. Blame it on years of sacrificing the radio for kid-friendly cd's in the car.
Oh,... and the fact that the radio stations in Bermuda suck and are stuck playing "Hits of the 70's 80's & 90's!"

So here I am, back in Canada, trying to play catch up. One of my new faves is homegrown Hedley, led by Jacob Hoggard, the 3rd place runner up from a long ago season of Canadian Idol (long before I got here, anyway...

Here's the song that's being played ad nauseum in my iPod lately:

(damn it! They've taken the embed feature off the YouTube clip. WHY?!)

Hedley's newest release, It's Never Too Late, is uber-catchy and has my 4 year old singing along. If you spent any part of your formative years in the early 80's, you'll love the video and will recognize it immediately. Watch the clip here, then come back... I'll wait: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l_h8_mbZsc

Did you recognize it???? The clothes, the hair, the body paint, the overall CHEESE??
If not... here's the original:

Ah... Flash from the past. Feels like yesterday ;)

Here's another band I'm loving -- Simple Plan. And this is just a coincidence, I promise... but I just found out that they're Canadian too!!
Have a listen...

Have you had any recent musical discoveries? Tell me about them...

FINALLY! The comment button returned.

Musical discoveries ... well Christine got me hooked on Within Temptation and Breaking Benjamin.

I love Simple Plan and Hedley.

I also (ssshh) like Miley Cyrus's new song.

I've also fallen for Big and Rich. I know they've been out for a while but I'm really digging them now.

Amy - I, too, confess to find Miss Cyrus's song a little catchy... "My best friend Amy says oh she's just being Wylie!" *hee*

I have no idea who Big and Rich are. I'll have to check them out.

Oooh, I like Simple Plan.

I've recently realized I need to find out what you youngsters are listening to - it's part of how I create my characters - I ask what type of music they'd listen to. And I'm so out of touch with the bands of the 90s and 2000s. (what do we call this decade? The noughts?)

So I've been going to Guitar Hero and Curly only to discover they're getting turned onto music from my era - Hendrix, CCR, Ozzy, Deep Purple ...

Go figure!

I'll have to download It's Never Too Late to my Ipod. That would be great riding down the road music.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't discovered any new music lately -- but I like all kinds of stuff. And yeah, that video -- blast from the past! :)

Like Leah, I think it's interesting that young people are tuning into music I grew up loving (and still love). :)

Love Hedley (yes, recognized that video immediately), love Simple Plan.

I also love Billy Talent.
Their song Surrender has to have some of the best lyrics going.

"She reads a book from across the street
Waiting for someone that she'll never meet
Talk over coffee for an hour or two
She wonders why I'm always in a good mood

Killing time before she struts her stuff
She needs support and I've become the crutch
She'll never know how much she means to me
I'd play the game but I'm the referee"

Tell me that isn't a great base for a romance novel!

I just discovered the Ting Tings. One of their songs was featured in an iPod commercial. I know Simple Plan, but am not familiar with Hedley.

There's a Canadian Idol? Doesn't Simon Cowell have enough money?

No musical discoveries, but that just because I don't listen to music.

Just recently I discovered the English group Muse through watching YouTube fan videos starring Guy of Gisborne/Richard Armitage. Several of the fan vids were to Muse tracks, so on the weekend I got one of their CD's. I LOVE it.

Julia - I haven't heard of Muse. I'll have to check them out.

Nicholas - it's okay, darling. Go back under that rock ;)

Jane - Ting Tings -- I HAVE heard of them :)
And do check out Hedley. They're really very good. Great lyrics.

Kimber - ah yes... Billy Talent. Another group I've heard of but don't know much about. Those lyrics are indeed 'romancy' :) I'll have to YouTube them. Thanks

Marley - great driving music, YES! My 4 year old LOVES that song in the car and I'm forced to hit 'repeat' numerous times during a trip. It's scary-catchy!

Leah - it's all part of discovering GREAT MUSIC. They made the sounds that new bands still draw from, so it makes sense.

TL - Do you write to music? Since your a musician yourself, I assumed so. I do, but I usually limit myself to classical/instrumental. At the moment I'm listening to Josh Bell's Red Violin soundtrack. Amazing!
