Thursday Thirteen #26 - My Favorite Smells

THIRTEEN FAVORITE SMELLS
  1. Autumn leaves - the crisp earthy smell. Reminds me of jumping into massive mounds of colorful birch and maple leaves when I was a kid.
  2. My children's hair when they've been outside playing.
  3. On a similar note, the smell of sheets that have hung on the line all day.
  4. Vanilla - both stimulates the appetite and calms. Good thing the extract doesn't taste as good as it smells or I'd be an addict.
  5. Baking bread - really, do I have to justify this one?
  6. Pizza, like when you open the box or first walk into a pizza parlor.
  7. My hubby's skin when he's been in the sun. (no, not sweat, it's another kind of smell)
  8. For the over 40 crowd - remember the smell of test papers that the teacher ran fresh off the old Gestetner machine? Mmmmm... chemicals.
  9. McCurdy's Insect Repellant (maybe this is just a childhood at-the-cottage memory)
  10. The ocean, first thing in the morning.
  11. Steaks on the BBQ.
  12. Fresh paint.
  13. My cat's paws. (But he died last month *sniff* so no more smelly cat feet)
Happy TTing - don't forget to leave your name.

I did the same list last week! I love the smell of autumn leaves too.

Happy TT!

Wylie, you are the only other person I've met who understands the "smells like sun" thing.

I've had to cut that phrase before, but now I have proof.

Hugs for the kitty! :-( I love the smell of white cotton sheets, bleached, and dried in the sun.

Insect Repellent??? Egads! (But I understand why...)

Same reason "wood smoke" makes me kinda gooey.

Hey! I'm under 40 still and I remember those ditto sheets. Man, they smelled gooooood.

I've never hung laundry out to dry; is it really that amazing? I know, I know: shut up and try it but really, what would the neighbors say?

Just the thought of smelling fresh baked bread makes my mouth water. Great List.

I remember the ditto sheets, too, and oh yeah, did they ever smell good! I was a real ditto-sniffer when I was a kid. No wonder my teachers thought I was a little bit strange. :)

And pizza... and vanilla... and steaks on the BBQ... and oh, you just can't beat the smell of baking bread!

I'm making myself hungry now.

Happy TT, my friend!

Sorry about your cat. :(

I requested my library to buy your book! They usually buy anything anyone requests, and this way tons of people will see it on the new fiction shelf.

Great list but I dont know about #9 and #13...lol. Vanilla smells wonderful, and steaks on the BBQ...YUM!! Happy TT.

I'm so sorry about your cat. What I love smelling is the way my kitty smells after she's been napping in front of the window soaking up the sun's rays. Nothing like a sleep-warmed kitty.

You had me up to the cat's paws...really! The ditto smell, right up there with rubber cement for me.

Love all these smells but one, good list!

Autumn leaves I can say, as we don't have autumn here. Vanilla, love it, Pizza, adore it, Steaks on BBQ, makes my mouth water.
Thanks for the visit.

Yep, vanilla and pizza sure do it for me! When I was a kid, I used to put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on my pizza slide. I thought it was yummy back then. Hehehe!

Vanilla is the best smell, ever. And I know what you mean about the skin in sun thing, although not your husband's in particular. Never met him. Honest.

Woodsmoke and fresh cut grass do it for me.

Great TT!

McCurdy's? Is it still around? I'd love a nice smelling insect repellent. And I'm so sorry about your cat. (In a strange twist of TT fate, I just read Jen's post about flatulence before this one. What are the odds?)

I love the scent of fresh bread, Body Shop body butters, the Lush soap shop and fresh lavendar. Nothing better than nice smells!

mmm vanilla!

and oh yeah, ditto sheets.

one of my all time favorite smells was the smell of the air in a grocery freezer. the long, low, open ones. as a 4-6 year old i would stick my head in and inhale until I was dizzy. don't know if i was getting high off it or just hyperventilating.

my TT is 13 musicians whose music I compose my stories to. a companion piece to yesterday's post about the influence of music on my writing.

interesting encounter your list of smells today because smells, like music, elicit emotion and I've been thinking of experimenting with a kind of aroma therapy for writing.

Now that is an interesting idea for a TT list. I am with you on almost all of them, although I have no idea what test paper was. But it is true that some chemicals smell fantastic, even though sometimes they probably are highly toxic.
But the cat feet? Hm, that does sound a little odd. Unfortunately I don't have a cat around to try it, but somehow I doubt I would find it enticing. ;o)
Sorry about your cat's death, though. It's always sad to lose a beloved pet.

OMG I used to love the smell of test paper when I was in school! I swear that's why I became a teacher.

I love the smell of sun on the kids too. It makes me feel wonderful.

i love the way the DH smells after he's been working otuside.

Love it.

And the smell of my kids, right out of the bath.

You lost me after pizza. lol

Elle Fredrix said...

Oh, yeah. I'm with you on most of these. I'd have to add woodsmoke/campfire. Hmm.

I can just smell all the things you listed as I was reading them. They're all my favorite, too. Great list.

What was that smell on the old Gestetner - methylated spirits? Do you think if we wrote to JR she would let us proof read #5, 6 7....

Red Garnier said...

Oh yum the ocean. That smell is I think my top, top, top smell.

Wylie. Really. Do you like the smell of FRESH PAINT? Makes me so dizzy! Eck! =)

Unknown said...

OMG Pizza, or an italian sandwich shop. Either works for me. ;) LOL

are the chemical paper, like smelling fresh black markers? Love bread, pizza, and sheets. *hugs* for the kitty, though my two just smell like chit

Awww... sorry to hear about your cat. I love the smell of Vanilla and Pizza too. I also love the smell of rain and baking cookies. :-)

Thanks for visiting my TT!

Oh, I used to love those old purple-inked test papers. I was just talking to someone the other day about how there's a whole generation of kids who know what it's like to get high off of busy work and pop quizzes.

Happy TT. :) Mine is up here

Rhian said...

test papers...TEST papers???
That seals it - next time someone tells me i'm totally weird - i'm sending them over here!

i do love the smell of fresh paint though AND the inks at a printhouse - you know back where they have all the heavy duty equipment clanking and coughing out brochures and such.
Fresh bread - mmmmmmmm!

Fresh baked bread is awesome. So is baking pie. Realtors recommend you bake a pie in your oven the day of an open house when you are trying to sell. I like vanilla. My kids' hair smells BAD....sweaty and gross.

Yes, and that smell when they come in from playing outside -- when it's cold. I love this list.

Me like pumpkin. Mmmmm, pumpkin (think of me doing a Homer impression, and excessive drooling.)

Tink said...

I can smell them over here... Mmmm... great smells!
My Tt is about full moon names.

Ocean smell...sigh...

I dig gasoline. Always have. Am I strange?

And thx for stopping by my TT. As for "knowing" a person thru pics, it's a close as some of will get to the folks we meet online. Although by your photo, you look like you could use some cheering up! I'll just have to trust you when you say you're happy :)
