Thursday Thirteen #33 - Movies

I don't often watch movies twice. If I do, it's because it's got one of the following qualities:
  • is an exceptional film

  • speaks to me on some personal level

  • is a musical (it's a feel-good thing)

  • stars Brad Pitt
Not a complicated matter. Here are 13 movies I've watched multiple times.

  1. The Red Violin - the story is wonderful and the music is brilliant. Joshua Bell does the music and he will blow you away.

  2. Legends of the Fall - one word: Tristan *sigh*

  3. Moulin Rouge - the colors, the music, the tragic love story!

  4. Chicago - the music, the dancing, and all that jazz...

  5. Citizen Kane - This movie was released in 1941 and can still hold it's own. The story telling and filming was fabulous. If you haven't seen it yet, please, do yourself a favor.
  6. Rocky Horror Picture Show - I probably saw this one about 30 times in my youth. Don't scoff! In what other movie can you throw toast and dance in the aisles?

  7. Something About Mary - something about it just cracked me up,... about 3 times.

  8. Gone With the Wind - I actually have seen many of the old classics many times, but this is one of my faves. And Bette Davis in Now, Voyageur.

  9. The Wizard of Oz - reminds me of my childhood. My mother would let me and my big sis eat our dinner in the living room on t.v. trays when it came on every year at Easter time

  10. Fight Club - that ending!! I started from the beginning as soon as it ended, just to see all the hidden images and clues. Hmmm... and wasn't Brad in this one? ;)

  11. Phantom of the Opera - Gerard Butler + tragic love story + great music = perfection

  12. The Bourne Identity - I was a HUGE Ludlum fan and was delighted that they made this movie ROCK, despite the fact that it strayed so far from the book. I never saw Matt as an 'action hero' until this, and he was the perfect combo of intense, tough and troubled.

  13. Casino Royale - Daniel Craig's 007 was worth seeing a second time. Maybe even a third.

There are many more, but this is a pretty fair representation.

What movie do your find worthy of rewatching? Leave you answer in comments...

My criteria for rewatching is the same as yours (substituting Clive for Brad Pitt, although I see where you're going with that Pitt thing):

Persuasion
Moonstruck
The Last Waltz
The Warriors
His Girl Friday
40 Year-Old Virgin
Pride and Prejudice, most of the versions

sure there are more, but these are the ones that jumped out right away.

Hi Megan - I haven't seen The Last Waltz or Warriors. I'm going to Blockbuster today so I'll check them out. And it was a toss-up between the 40 Yr Old Virgin and Something About Mary. I only listed SAM because I saw it 3 times and 40 yr old twice (so far)!

Oh, sheesh, my list would be so long! Ghostbusters for sure! (My eldest used to refuse to any to any name but Egon.) A new favourite - Stranger than Fiction, and old favourites: Notting Hill, Sleepless in Seattle, IQ (another Meg Ryan movie), Shakespeare in Love, Lord of the Rings - the entire trilogy, Dave (with Kevin Kline), all the Lethal Weapons (ok, I'm held hostage by my husband, but I enjoy the play between Danny Glover and Mel), the Harry Potter movies are played a lot here. Don't forget all those old 1950's movies - most of the Tracy/Hepburn movies - Desk Set, Adam's Rib; His Girl Friday with Rosalind Russell, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House; Some Like it Hot. And if I'm all alone - Truly, Madly, Deeply - as long as I have tons of tissues. I KNOW there are tons I've forgotten that I watch over and over again. (Hopefully you don't get multiple copies because it keeps asking me to enter the letters over and over ...)

mmm, love the new Bond! Rough and tough :-)

Have you see 7 Years in Tibet? I just watched that for the first time the other day...sweet movie :-)

LOTR tops my list of movies I could watch over and over, also:
POTC
Tombstone
Forest Gump
Harold and Maude
most any Johnny Depp movie

I've seen three of those. I’ve seen Kane about 4 times, so that's probably enough. I haven't seen GWTW for about 20 years but maybe looking back on the experience is more fun than actually seeing the film. I didn’t care for Chicago at all, I’m afraid, for reasons I won’t bore you with. My own list would include, but not be limited to

Stepping Out
Oh What A Lovely War
Kind Hearts And Coronets
Battle Of Britain
A Touch Of Class
Evil Under The Sun
Death On The Nile
Zulu

I shall probably think of several more equally deserving of inclusion, or maybe more so, but by then it will be too late.

Leah - and speaking of the 50's, I can watch those Doris Day movies over and over. There was something so sweetly innocent about them.

Ellen - yes on LoTR. You almost HAVE to watch them over and over just to pick up on everything!

Janet - I did see 7 Years in Tibet and enjoyed it immensely.

Nicholas - Evil Under the Sun. I forgot all about that movie!

I SO want to name a character Tristan. All because of that stupid movie.

So what do you suggest to me?? Walter. What an un-sexy, un-Brad Pitt name!

I love you anyway, have no fears. And Walter's pretty cool.

Great list! I'm not fond of Chicago but, to each his own. Loved Rocky Horror PIcture Show in the theater but it loses it appeal on the small screen. My list of of rewatchable movies is huge so I won't bore you with the whole thing. A few off the top of my head are: A Far Off Place, Dear Frankie, Im Juli, and Apollo 13.

I loved The Bourne Identity. I haven't seen the third Bourne movie yet. I'm waiting for it to come out on DVD.
One of my favorites is Love Actually. I watch this every Christmas.

Oh yes! Rocky Horror Picture Show - Dammit Janet! What a hoot :-)

I love rewatching flicks like Gone With the Wind and Gidget, but my most frequently watched movie is The Red Shoes with Moira Shearer. Always cry.

We're just the opposite, in that I obsessively rewatch movies. I don't consider that I've really seen it until I see it a second time. :)

And Moulin Rouge!--le sigh.

Gone with the Wind? Oh Wylie ... ok we all have our quirks.

Red Violin is great as for my watch agains, Persuasion, The 40 Year Old Virgin, any SNL, The Ghostbusters, LOTR and Harry Potters. Alot of my watch agains are usually comedies. Or HEA romances ... Ok so I am addicted to movies ... I think it's easier to ask me which I will never watch again.

Sharon said...

I like your topic choice. :)
Wizard of Oz-yes. And double YEAH to Brad Pitt as Tristan. H-O-T! lol

Some I can watch over & over:
Back to the Future
The Breakfast Club
Mona Lisa Smile

I tried watching Moulon Rouge twice, but I just can't. It makes no sense to me and I wind up ejecting it from my DVD and moving on. All of the Bourne movies are worth multiple views. If you like westerns, try Open Range with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner. It is a classic. I've probably seen it a dozen times.
