Thursday Thirteen #34 - 13 Evacuation Essentials

THURSDAY THIRTEEN #34
Chatting with a friend from CA, discussing the fires, etc. She told me that some people had all of ten minutes to evacuate. Not to make light of the situation, but it got me thinking....

What would I grab if I only had time to choose 13 items?

(besides my kids, because that's rather obvious).

  1. my laptop

  2. photo albums

  3. important papers folder (passports, insurance, etc) - but I'd leave the bills to burn :)

  4. snacks for the road

  5. toothbrush

  6. t-shirts, socks, undies (grab a bag, shove em in, who cares about coordinating)

  7. jewelery box

  8. the kittens

  9. kitten food/litter

  10. Kidlet essentials: a few toys, books, DVD's

  11. kid's time capsules

  12. cell phone

  13. credit cards

Have I missed anything? What would you choose?

I was worried for a minute when I didn't see your kids on the list but then I re-read your post and spotted they were above #1.

Great Idea for a TT :-)

akkk!!!! Too much pressure, it just shows how disorganized I am.

Pics, laptop, gun, that's it!

I'd have to be quick, which would mean I'd forget something important. Even with a list. The kids make it an extra challenge, thinking of things to keep them calm and occupied. *shudder* Glad I don't have to do that, and feeling craptastic sad for the people who did.

What a terrible situation...I was able to see a lot of the interviews of people who were evacuated while sitting in bus depots...Greyhound plays CNN in the lobbys. It is such a scary situation...it's almost like all of the people in those areas should have special vaults/safes available with photos to store in them etc.

I started thinking...maybe with digital stuff...people have made back up programs and discs of valuables.

But just the chaos of moving kids...how could kids feel safe going back to home...or worse ashes. Very sad.

Two years later...New Orleans is hardly returned to normal...in many areas I drove just empty houses...house after house abandoned and a mess.

Great to see you and thanks so much for visiting...I really missed you. And good luck on this months challenges of your life and blogs and writing!

Cheers
Candy

Wylie you are so right, I hadn't thought of this but 10 mins seems such a short time to get all you hold dearest. Definitely kids first, laptop, money, jewelry, pets! ;)

There was a time during the cold war when we were required to have a plan of what to take if we had to be evacuated--it was pretty similar: photos, important papers, sentimental items, and essentials.

Sounds about right. Even though I would be freaking because I couldn't take all my books and movies and other assorted memorobilia.

But that sounds pretty good. :)

People coordinate their skibbies?

Great great list! Makes you think. Let's see... my kids of course, my laptop, pictures, my special box of cards and love letters my husband has written me over the years... and so much more. I hope I never have to decide.

Happy TT:)

I had this happen to a friend of mine a while ago - she didn't have the ten minutes as she escaped with her life, but I know what she regretted losing: her photos of her kids when they were little. So yeah, after ensuring my family was safe, the photos would come next, my needlework - thousands of hours of work there, my laptop and if I could get to it, the external backup drive - all the computers are backed up to it so no one would lose much of their work. Paperwork like drivers licenses and passport, yup. Clothing would come fairly far down the list I think. That's replaceable. Somewhere in there, IF there was time left, perhaps some of my autographed books, especially the Kathleen Woodiwiss one since that is irreplaceable now. But in reality - I probably would have left the house before grabbing the clothing ...

I wish I thought I'd be capable of thinking that clearly: for me it would be husband, cats, hamster (no kids) and my laptop. But the paperwork point is a good one (good thought---must place paperwork in easily accessible location in case of hurricanes)...

Excellent idea for a post.

I know I've arrived late to the 13 party, but we have some GORGEOUS photos to share (no words, just pictures and we didn't take them ourselves so it isn't boasting).
