Good News, Bad News, First Review of Law of Averages

Good news: The surgery went well. It's over (at last!), the disfunctional gallbladder removed and life (albiet without pizza) can continue...

Bad news: Post-op Day 3 I'm still feely pretty crappy. Very tired, woozy, nauseous, etc... They say that it takes 1-3 weeks for the system to resume normal function, but I'm impatient. I really thought I'd be writing my days away while I recup, but I have NO attention span. None. Zero. Can't even read (ack!) and I'm only on-line for about 10 minutes a day (which is why no blog visits... sorry!)

Good news: First review of Law of Averages is in. Here's what Angel from Romance Junkies has to say...

Title: Law Of Averages
Category: Contemporary
Reviewer: Angel
Reviewer e-mail: angelbrewer@romancejunkies.com
Author: Wylie Kinson
Publisher: Ellora’s Cave
Release Date: May 2008
Blue Ribbon Rating: 4.5
ISBN: 1419916250
Format: EBOOK

(deleted the summary of the book 'cause it's long...)

LAW OF AVERAGES is a story that rocks. Gabriel is not your average rock star and that makes him an interesting character. Megan has no clue as to the identity of the man who is sharing her vacation home and it adds an air of deception to the mix. The love scenes are totally volcanic and have more than enough heat to keep you simmering. Wylie Kinson has a creative flair that I truly enjoyed. After reading this book I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Wylie Kinson’s work in the future.

Thursday Thirteen revisited... Why I WILL Write Another Book!

If my sulky-sounding Thursday Thirteen didn't completely turn you off of everything Wylie, then please go to Julia's blog and see what this amazing book-loving, peace-propigating, vampire-writing blogger had to say about Law of Averages. *squee*

Aubrey's Shindig, Wii Fit Update

If you're not busy tonight, tune into Aubrey's Shindig on Calgary's CJSW 90.9 FM -- that's where I'll be, chatting about lust and rock 'n' roll in Law of Averages -- 9pm mountain time... which I think is 11pm eastern. I hope. Gee, I'd better get that figured out before tonight!

No writing was done this weekend (for reasons below) but I did receive some very nice emails from Law of Averages readers. Comments from readers are just about the best thing in the world, so if you've read a good book lately, don't be afraid to email the author. They'll appreciate it and you just may provide the spark they needed to get through a slump :)

At risk of sounding like a spokesperson for the Nintendo Wii...
When I look around the house at all the 'toys' (treadmill, bikes, trampoline, gym membership, video games, computer games, etc...) the Wii Fit is by far dollars-and-cents (and sense!) ahead of the pack by far.
Even through father-in-law visiting and youngest son's birthday party, it's gotten non-stop usuage. We've had to practically lift Grandpa off the balance board so we can get some Wii time ourselves (and he rocks, btw -- shattered most of our records!); and all the party guests, both adults and kids, had a go. How many other gaming systems can people from 4 years old to 'Grandpa' use?
Someone is almost always on it. We haven't watched television since American Idol last Tuesday.
And though I can't speak to the benefits in terms of weight loss yet (between eating out, bbq-ing and birthday cake, it's not been a typical week), at least it's getting our collective butts off the couch!

It's a busy week ahead, but I'm determined to get some writing-time in. What's on your agenda?

Law of Averages, coming May 16th from Ellora's Cave

Yes, yes, I know I'm on blogatus (blog + hiatus) but I just wanted to SHOUT about an upcoming contest to promote the May 16th release of Law of Averags. The action starts on April 1st and there are loads of prizes:
  • 8 Bermuda Calanders
  • 2 Bermuda beach bags
  • 1 Discover the Wylie side of romance T-shirt
  • a free download of Law of Averages

Why all the Bermuda pimpage? The blurb explains:

Megan Frost, an up-and-coming restaurateur, knows everything there is to know about the culinary arts, but when it comes to pop culture, she’s been living under a rock. During a vacation to the sunny island of Bermuda, the yummiest
dish she’s ever laid eyes on brings her out of hiding.

British musician Gabriel Law, the famous Dark Angel of Rock, regrets putting his
songwriting on the back burner. Tired and creatively simmered out, he retreats
to the peace and solitude of Bermuda in order to cook up some original sounds
for his new album. But when he finds a naked woman in his holiday cottage, he
happily exchanges solitude for a sizzling duet.

The ingredients for a sexy, scorching relationship are in place, but the mix isn’t complete without a romantic legend, a mysterious taxi driver and a surprise symbol of destiny from the aquamarine sea…

And it shall have a cover...

Drumroll please...

For the record, the hero of this book, sexy rock star Gabriel Law (the REAL Gabriel Law, not the representing model on the cover) wouldn't be caught dead in a turquoise Speedo.

N.E.V.E.R.

But I suppose the art department couldn't leave the model naked ;)

MAY 16!! SQUEEEE

Law of Averages - unofficial blurb, opinions wanted

The storyboarding course had to be set aside yesterday so I could complete edits on Law of Averages. They've been sitting on my laptop since Christmas Eve but I couldn't face rechoreagraphing steamy sex scenes while my kids were watching The Backyardigans or Spy Kids next to me on the couch. Ewww!

In addition, I had to come up with a blurb - that nugget of story meant to entice the reader to buy. I did up a very short punchy paragraph and sent it off to Kelli, aka editor-extraordinaire, then went to bed. Alas,... sleep was short. The blurb sucked on deep subconscious level and I must have come to that realization sometime around 1am, because I was out of bed and rewriting.

I NEED YOU, PEOPLE!! Please, your honest opinions on the following would be greatly appreciated. Would YOU be enticed to buy?

LAW OF AVERAGES

Megan Frost, an up and coming restaurateur, knows everything there is to know
about the culinary arts, but when it comes to pop culture, she’s been living
under a rock. During a vacation to the sunny island of Bermuda, the yummiest
dish she’s ever laid eyes on rolls that rock right off her.

British musician, Gabriel Law, the famous Dark Angel of Rock, regrets putting his song writing on the back burner. Tired and creatively simmered out, he retreats to
the peace and solitude of Bermuda in order to cook up some original sounds for
his new album. But when he finds a naked, sunburned and self-proclaimed average
girl in his holiday cottage, he happily exchanges seclusion for sizzling
passion.

The ingredients for a sexy, scorching relationship are in place, but the recipe isn’t complete with out a legend, a mysterious taxi driver and a shimmering aquamarine…

Let me know: is it hokey, jokey or okey-dokey? Thanks blog-buds!

Warning: No trace of HUMBLE in this post

See that thing on my sidebar that says CURRENT WIP? Over there to the right -- go look. Look now, because soon it'll be gone. Not gone-gone, but moved down to the MY BOOKS section.

Law of Averages has been ACCEPTED by EC!

*Postscript: deleted the next two paragraphs, because I managed to annoy even myself*

The End

Last night I finally got to type the two sweetest words a writer knows. Six little letters that when strung together produce a satisfied smile of accomplishment, a sigh of relief, or if you're like my buddy Christine, a snoopy dance.

THE END.
(translated into writer's speak - WOO HOO!)

Law of Averages is DONE.
I'm going to put it away for a day and then go back for a final polish, a spit and shine, then send it off to my editor by Halloween.
I feel particularly good about this story because I've never produced a piece so fast, approximately 6 weeks for 35,000 words. Of course, my housework went undone, my laundry piled up to new heights and I've barely seen my children, but we all make sacrifices, right?
And I really LIKE this story and the characters. I hope you will to, if my editor accepts it for publication ;D (feel free to cross you fingers on my behalf)
